Wise Tech - Technology news for non-tech humans!

Try out having a conversation with your future self - it’s enlightening!

1. Speaking to the Future You (via AI)

What’s the tech?
A new service from FutureMe AI allows users to interact with simulated versions of themselves from the future, using AI (artificial intelligence) and predictive algorithms (formulas that estimate future outcomes based on current data).

How it's used?
Users engage with a digital avatar that represents them at a future age. You can ask it questions about your future career, relationships, or life decisions. The AI responds based on your current traits and estimated life path, helping you explore different choices without actually making them.

Why it's news now?
This service is gaining attention as a unique way to reflect on your future, but it also raises concerns. While some find it helpful for decision-making, experts warn that relying too much on AI-generated predictions could affect mental health or lead to unrealistic expectations.

2.  First Passenger Electric Aircraft to Take Off Vertically

What’s the tech?
The ALIA-250, developed by Beta Technologies, is the first passenger-carrying electric aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing, called eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing). This technology allows the aircraft to hover and take off without needing a runway, similar to a helicopter but powered by electricity.

How it's used?
The ALIA-250 can transport up to five passengers or carry 1,400 pounds of cargo. It has a range of 250 nautical miles (about 288 miles) and can reach speeds up to 170 mph. It's expected to be used for short-distance flights, especially in urban areas where traditional planes can't land. UPS and the U.S. Air Force have already ordered these aircraft, and Beta Technologies plans to start commercial flights by 2025.

Why it's news now?
The ALIA-250 could revolutionize how people travel short distances and how companies deliver cargo. With Beta Technologies currently working to get FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approval, we could see these planes in the skies soon.

3. California Governor Stops A.I. Legislation

What’s the tech?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the technology that allows computers and machines to learn, reason, and perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. Recently, California proposed a bill to regulate the use and development of AI systems.

How it's used?
The bill aimed to create guidelines to ensure AI technologies are developed responsibly, protecting workers' rights and privacy. However, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed this legislation, expressing concern that it might slow down AI innovation. Instead, he’s forming a panel of experts to develop a more thoughtful approach to AI regulation.

Why it's news now?
This veto has sparked a debate between lawmakers and tech companies over how best to manage AI, which is becoming an increasingly important part of our everyday lives. Newsom’s decision reflects the tension between promoting innovation and ensuring public safety.

Bonus Topic: What is Google’s NotebookLM?

What it does?
Google's NotebookLM is an AI-powered writing tool that can turn written content into engaging podcast-style conversations. It takes dry, dense material and creates a dialogue between two virtual hosts, making it easier to follow.

How it’s used?
You simply upload a document or article, and NotebookLM generates a summary of the key points, presenting them as an audio conversation. It’s particularly useful for students or professionals who need to absorb complex information more easily.

Why it’s popular?
People like it because it transforms long, boring text into something easier to listen to, like a podcast. It also makes learning more engaging. However, there are concerns that it could replace real human-created content or spread inaccurate information if the AI doesn’t interpret the material correctly.
